How to Care for Sansevieria ‘Laurentii’

The Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, also known as the Snake Plant Laurentii or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is a hardy indoor plant with tall, upright leaves edged in golden-yellow. It’s one of the easiest houseplants to care for, making it a favorite for homes, offices, and low-maintenance gardens.

Light

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light, but highly tolerant of low light conditions.
  • Can adapt to fluorescent or artificial light—great for offices.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may scorch leaves.

Watering

  • Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Overwatering is the most common problem; roots are prone to rot.
  • In winter, reduce watering to once every 4–6 weeks.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers 60–85°F (16–29°C).
  • Tolerates dry air well—no need for misting.
  • Protect from frost and cold drafts.

Soil & Fertilizer

  • Use a well-draining soil mix, such as cactus or succulent soil.
  • Fertilize lightly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
  • Do not fertilize in fall and winter.

Maintenance

  • Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • Remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the soil line.
  • Slow-growing, so rarely needs pruning.

Repotting

  • Snake Plants prefer to be slightly root-bound.
  • Repot only every 2–3 years, or when the pot becomes crowded.
  • Always use a container with drainage holes.

Bonus

  • Occasionally produces fragrant white flowers under stress or with age (a rare but delightful event!).

Safety

  • Toxic to pets if ingested. Keep away from cats and dogs.

The Laurentii Snake Plant is one of the most resilient indoor plants—perfect for beginners, travelers, or anyone wanting low-maintenance greenery.
