How to Care for Marginata Colorama

The Dracaena Marginata ‘Colorama’, also called the Madagascar Dragon Tree, is a hardy indoor plant known for its upright canes and slender leaves striped with pink, red, and green. With proper care, it will add color and height to your space for years.

Light

  • Best in bright, indirect light.
  • Can tolerate lower light, but leaf color may fade.
  • Avoid strong, direct sun, which can scorch leaves.

Watering

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.
  • Empty saucers after watering—roots should not sit in water.
  • Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal range: 65–80°F (18–27°C).
  • Keep away from cold drafts or heat vents.
  • Average home humidity is fine; occasional misting helps prevent brown tips.

Soil & Feeding

  • Use a well-draining potting mix.
  • Fertilize every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer (diluted to half strength).
  • Do not fertilize in fall and winter.

Maintenance

  • Trim off yellow or dry leaves to keep the plant tidy.
  • Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • To control height, cut back tall canes—new shoots will grow below the cut.

Common Issues

  • Brown leaf tips: usually from low humidity, over-fertilizer, or tap water with fluoride—try filtered water.
  • Pests: watch for spider mites, mealybugs, or scale. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years, or when roots become crowded.
  • Choose a pot with good drainage, 1–2 inches larger in diameter than the old one.

Safety

  • Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. Keep out of reach of pets.
