How to Care for Syngonium

Syngonium, also known as arrowhead plant or goosefoot plant, is a gorgeous and easy-to-care-for houseplant loved for its vibrant foliage and versatile growth habit. Whether you’re a beginner plant parent or an experienced indoor gardener, Syngonium offers beauty without too much fuss. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your Syngonium thriving!

Light Requirements

Syngonium plants prefer bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch their leaves, while too little light can cause the vibrant variegation to fade. They can adapt to lower light conditions, but growth may slow.

Tip: If your plant’s leaves are turning solid green and losing variegation, it likely needs more light.

Watering Needs

Water your Syngonium when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. It’s better to underwater slightly than to overwater, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.

  • In warmer months, you might water once a week.
  • In cooler months, reduce to every 10–14 days.

Pro tip: Use room temperature water and avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.

Humidity & Temperature

Syngonium plants love high humidity, making them perfect for kitchens or bathrooms. If your home is dry, consider using a pebble tray or humidifier, especially during winter.

  • Ideal temperature range: 60–85°F (16–29°C)
  • Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Soil & Repotting

Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix made for houseplants or one with peat, perlite, and a bit of orchid bark works great.

Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots are growing out of the drainage holes. Spring is the best time to repot.

Pruning & Propagation

Syngoniums tend to grow leggy over time. You can trim them back to encourage bushier growth. Always use clean scissors or shears.

They are easy to propagate in water or soil:

  1. Cut below a node with at least one leaf.
  2. Place the cutting in water or moist soil.
  3. Roots should form in a few weeks!

Pet Safety Note

Keep Syngonium out of reach of pets and children. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation if ingested.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Crispy brown edges: Usually caused by low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  • Leggy growth: Your plant might not be getting enough light.
