What You Should Know About Cinnamon Trees

Caring for a cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum cassia) can be a temperamental, but it’s definitely rewarding! We offer Cinnamon trees in 10″ pots.

Here are some key tips for keeping your cinnamon tree healthy and productive:

how to care for a cinnamon tree

Climate and Location

Temperature: Cinnamon trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They prefer temperatures between 60-85°F and are sensitive to frost.

Sunlight: They need plenty of sunlight to grow well, ideally full sun to partial shade. If growing indoors, place them near a south-facing window or under grow lights.

Soil Requirements

Type: Well-draining soil is crucial. A mix of loamy soil with good organic matter is ideal. You can add perlite or sand to improve drainage.

pH: Cinnamon trees prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 to 7.0).

Watering

Frequency: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Method: Water deeply to encourage root growth, but ensure excess water can drain away to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing

Type: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or one specifically formulated for tropical plants.

Frequency: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) every 6-8 weeks. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when the tree’s growth slows down.

Pruning

Purpose: Pruning helps maintain the shape of the tree and encourages healthy growth. It also improves air circulation and light penetration.

Method: Remove any dead or diseased branches. You can also trim the tips of the branches to promote bushier growth.

Pests and Diseases

Pests: Watch out for common pests like spider mites, scale insects, and aphids. Regularly inspect your tree and treat any infestations with appropriate insecticides or natural remedies.

Diseases: Keep an eye out for fungal infections and root rot. Ensuring proper drainage and air circulation helps prevent these issues.

Harvesting Cinnamon

Timing: Cinnamon is harvested from the inner bark of the tree. The bark is typically collected after the tree is at least 2-3 years old.

Method: Peel the bark off the stems. It will dry into cinnamon quills. This process can be labor-intensive but is quite satisfying!

Potting and Repotting

Pot Size: If growing in a pot, choose a container with drainage holes. Cinnamon trees prefer slightly tight conditions, so don’t over-pot.

Repotting: Repot when the tree outgrows its container or every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and promote healthy growth.

Growing a cinnamon tree can be a delightful endeavor if you can provide it with the right conditions and care. Whether you’re growing it indoors or in a garden, it’s a fascinating plant with a rich history and practical use.
