The Christmas cactus, also known as Schlumbergera, is a popular houseplant renowned for its vibrant blooms that often appear around the holiday season, hence the name. It’s native to the cloud forests of Brazil, where it grows as an epiphyte among tree branches and rocks.
At Shane Tinker Enterprises, Inc., we carry Christmas Cacti in a variety of bloom colors in 4″, 6″, and 8″ pots.
Here are some key things to know about Christmas cacti:
- Appearance: Unlike many cacti, the Christmas cactus has flat, segmented stems that give it a more trailing appearance. It produces tubular flowers in a range of colors, including red, pink, white, and purple. These flowers typically bloom in late fall to early winter.
- Care:
- Light: It prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves.
- Water: It needs regular watering, but be careful not to overwater. Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
- Temperature: It thrives in cooler temperatures, ideally between 60-70°F. Avoid exposing it to drafts or sudden temperature changes.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix designed for succulents or cacti works well.
- Humidity: It enjoys higher humidity, so occasional misting or a humidity tray can be beneficial.
- Blooming: To encourage blooming, it needs a period of cooler temperatures and reduced watering for about six weeks leading up to its expected bloom time. This helps simulate the natural conditions of its native environment.
- Propagation: You can propagate Christmas cacti from stem cuttings. Let the cuttings callus over for a day or two before planting them in a well-draining mix.
Christmas cacti are relatively easy to care for and can be a stunning addition to your home (or as a gift) during the winter months with their cheerful blooms. A great addition to the Christmas Cacti for the holiday season is the Norfolk Pine.
